Surface Matters

Building a new home presents a blank canvas, allowing you to create bespoke spaces for comfortable day-to-day living and effortless entertaining – an opportunity the owners of this recently completed Melbourne home fully embraced.

When briefing the design team at Sixth St Projects, the owners were at pains to emphasise that they didn’t want to be confined in their use of colour and form. Central to this was the use of a surface material that would enhance the home’s design and last a lifetime. Sintered porcelain was chosen due to its exceptional qualities, superior stain resistance, UV stability, sustainability and aesthetic appeal. Porcelain Plus Australia, with its extensive range of sophisticated European sintered porcelain, was able to provide the perfect product for every application.

In the kitchen and pantry, Calacatta Magnifico by Infinity takes centre stage, replicating the look of natural stone and imbuing the spaces with a sense of luxury. These large-size slabs conjure the white marbles we associate with Italy and boast a light background traced with bold, dark, rhythmic veining. In the kitchen, Calacatta Magnifico was used for the benchtops, double-bookmatched island waterfalls, splashback and the shelf above the cooktop. This is contrasted by Laminex Sublime Teak cabinetry, with its soothing mid-tones and warming woodgrain texture.

For the bathrooms, the owners selected Infinity’s Chianca di Ostuni. This draws its colour inspiration from the sun-drenched beaches and rustic landscapes of the Mediterranean while evoking the texture of hand-cast concrete for a contemporary touch. For one bathroom, the owners requested curved apron vanities to match the stunning rounded shower. Typically, curves are not possible with porcelain, but by cutting the radius into facet segments, a solution was found and the twin vanities became the stars of the show.

Chianca di Ostuni was also used for the barbecue in the outdoor entertaining area. Sintered porcelain is ideal for exterior use and can easily hold up to Melbourne’s harsh weather. When working with sintered porcelain, precise measuring and cutting is essential. Finding experienced craftsmen is vital and Porcelain Plus Australia is trusted industry-wide to get it right the first time, every time.
