Fisher & Paykel bring steel accents to timber kitchen design

Edition Office has completed Naples Street House, a single-storey family residence in Melbourne that places the kitchen at its centre, with Fisher & Paykel appliances adding refined steel accents to the timber and brick design.

The home wraps around a sheltered courtyard and is clad in pale brick across its exterior walls, pitched roof and garden-facing elevations.

This material choice creates what the architects describe as a “monolithic envelope,” referencing the low, pitched forms of the neighbourhood’s interwar housing. Within this solid shell, a light-filled timber kitchen becomes the social hub of the home.

Edition Office designed the kitchen to accommodate multiple generations of one family, combining durability with warmth. Bespoke cabinetry crafted from spotted gum plywood conceals a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher and rangehood, maintaining a seamless visual flow. In contrast, stainless steel countertops are left exposed, sitting flush with an integrated oven and cooktop from Fisher & Paykel’s contemporary product line. This play of concealed timber and visible steel gives the kitchen both a tactile intimacy and a professional edge.

“The Fisher & Paykel appliances allowed us to plan a more flexible space and allow for a kitchen that can be used by a multitude of family all at once,” said Edition Office director Aaron Roberts. The result is a highly functional space that anchors family life, while connecting directly to the dining and living areas and opening outward to the rest of the house.

Elsewhere, sustainably sourced hardwood plywood lines the interior walls, unifying the spaces and echoing the kitchen’s material palette. Bedrooms and bathrooms are arranged along a private hallway, while floor-to-ceiling windows bring light deep into the plan, warming burnished concrete floors and enhancing energy efficiency.

Founded in New Zealand in 1934, Fisher & Paykel is known for appliances that integrate seamlessly into architecture, making the brand a natural choice for a house where design and function are closely entwined. In Naples Street House, the marriage of timber, brick and steel ensures the kitchen remains both the aesthetic centrepiece and the practical heart of family life.
