KBDi-certified and/or qualified kitchen or bathroom designers can help dreams come true

Australia has a wealth of kitchen and bathroom designers who are available to take on your next renovation project. But how do consumers know the person they have chosen is a professional in their field? It’s easy. By asking designers about their level of qualification and training, people who are thinking about renovating their kitchen or bathroom can get a sense of their standing within the design community.

The Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi) has launched a specialist training organisation, Designer Training Pty Ltd, which is dedicated to providing the highest levels of specialist training to kitchen and bathroom designers and other industry professionals.

Designer Training is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and offers a range of professional courses for kitchen and bathroom designers who wish to excel in their chosen field. Courses range from entry-level design, where students are introduced to the basics of design, through to a Certificate IV in the Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces. Participants not only receive a broad range of skills across all areas, but specialise in either kitchen design or bathroom design, which enables them to go on and become a Certified Kitchen Designer or Certified Bathroom Designer as a part of KBDI’s accreditation program. This is the highest level of professional development available in Australia.

Utilising expert industry trainers — industry practitioners with current skills — the organisation is dedicated to advancing the industry by providing quality training.

Trained design professionals can offer consumers the best advice and assistance for their kitchen or bathroom renovation. When working with a professional, they gain the peace of mind needed to ensure the project runs smoothly, to budget, on time and with minimum inconvenience.

Liz Grimmett is a Sydney-based designer who recently completed the Certificate IV in the Design of Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces through Designer Training. This course involves a portion of study via correspondence and two face-to-face workshops. This type of distance education provides for people who are time-poor or distance-challenged to have some flexibility in undertaking study while working and attending to other life commitments.

Liz decided to undertake this training to challenge herself and become a better designer. “It has really allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, to try new and creative designs and to learn a great deal more about kitchen products,” she says. “Throughout the course I found myself changing the way I was designing kitchens and can see a great improvement in both the functionality and visual appeal of the kitchens I’m working with.”

Originally a primary school teacher, Liz then became a flight attendant and, with the collapse of Ansett, decided to retrain as an interior designer. In 2006, she started working with a kitchen company while studying and was keen to find a course that focused specifically on kitchens. At the time there was nothing available, but once the Certificate IV course was established, Liz was one of the first students to sign up. “I wanted a thorough working knowledge and understanding of kitchen design and the background to the construction areas and trade work involved,” she explains. “I learnt some of this on the job, but I was aware that there were many gaps that I wanted to fill. This was definitely achieved through the course.”

Liz found the course an empowering and positive experience, saying, “The course has inspired me to see that there is always something to learn, to keep an open mind and enjoy the process of refining my own abilities and feel motivated to keep discovering the many new and innovative products available.”

Designer Training has spaces available for the Certificate IV in Kitchens, Bathrooms and Interior Spaces commencing in March in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville.
