Technology where you least expect it

As a leading Australian name in bathroom design, Reece’s BIA offers both budding and established designers the opportunity to showcase their work on an international stage, have their work commercially produced, and take home part of a $35,000 prize pool.

The concept of this year’s competition revolves around “Exploring Tomorrow’s Bathroom Today” in three categories: destination space, sustainable space and independent space. Peter Wilson, Reece CEO, explains the vision behind this year’s competition, “The BIA has always pushed the bathroom experience forward,” he says. “We believe exploring the potential of technology in the bathroom offers a unique platform for designers to create something truly innovative in a space that has not yet fully realised that potential.”

While the bathroom may not seem the obvious room for a technological makeover, the Nielson 2012 Social Media Report found that 32 per cent of 18–24 year olds use social networking in this space. For Reece, this is a sign that technology is infiltrating its way deeper into the family home — even into the private spaces.
The BIA is now in its eighth year, and brings together a judging panel of design experts, including Stuart Constantine (Core77 and Coroflot Co-founder), Joseph Congost (Roca) and Piet Billekens (Nobili).

“The BIA has long been a supporter of the Australian Design Industry through its celebration of innovative design,” says Peter. “We’re excited about discovering new ways of enhancing the performance and quality of experience in the most important room in the house.”
