The Edge Awards

The Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF) and Decoration and Design Sydney have wrapped up for another year, following a record attendance of more than 6600 buyers from Australia and overseas.

The work of Australia’s most promising fledging furniture designers was unveiled at The Edge design competition, with awards announced on the opening day. Featuring the work of 46 emerging designers, winners were announced across Student, Commercial, Concept and Green categories.

The Student winner was Daniel Mazic from UTS with his asymmetrical Contour Chair, which was commended for its unique shape and great craftsmanship. The Green and Commercial awards went to Andrew Bezzina and Hugh Worthington of Chunk Design for their sustainable Tooths Stool and versatile Robots Stool, while the Concept award went to James Hargraves for his intricate lighting design, the Weft 056 Pendant.

“The Edge 2011 saw an unparalleled range of entries – from the futuristic and avant-garde to the organic and eco-chic. We are always impressed by the number of sustainable designs, but this year’s competitors really pushed the boundaries when it came to transforming old materials into something surprising and inspiring,” said Curator Uli Hasel.

Taking place over three days, the Seminar Series welcomed international speakers Janice Lindsay (Canada) and Mary Shaw (France), who spoke on colour direction and creating ambiance for the home. Australian experts included Genty Marshall, WGSN’s Heidi Dyt and architect Peter Ireland.
