Pink Stucco Housing by V Taller Takes Shape in Tulum

Mexican studio V Taller has completed a residential complex in Tulum that combines sculptural form, dense living and environmental restraint, wrapped in a distinctive pink stucco finish.

Completed in 2024, the 6,178 square metre project presents what the Guadalajara based studio describes as an architectural response to the intersection of space, time and environment, positioning architecture as a regenerative force rather than an imposition on the landscape.

At the heart of the development is a round central tower conceived as a contemporary interpretation of the mythical Tower of Babel. The sculptural form is punctured by narrow vertical slit windows and accessed via a freestanding staircase that crosses a shallow moat. Planting encircles both the base and the crown of the tower, while a triangular aperture opens skyward, directing views and daylight upward through the structure.

The overall plan takes the form of an eye, with the tower acting as the pupil. Around a planted courtyard designed to encourage reforestation and optimise airflow, close to 60 apartments are arranged across three levels. Set on a site of less than one acre, the curved vertical configuration reduces land consumption by almost 40 per cent when compared to conventional horizontal developments, while preserving generous open space at the centre of the project.

The apartments cater to both short term visitors and permanent residents, reflecting Tulum’s dual identity as a tourism destination and a growing local community. Each unit includes a fully equipped kitchen, combined living and dining spaces, private bedrooms and bathrooms, and a garden or balcony with an integrated jacuzzi. Narrow staircases between the units act as tunnels of light, while a radial layout is capped by a series of straight and wedge shaped barrel vaults.

Architecturally, each level is defined by a distinct relationship to the courtyard. Ground floor units open through an arched colonnade, the middle level features inverted semi circular balcony openings, and the upper floor introduces double height spaces with elongated oval apertures that frame light and views.

The entire complex is finished in chukum, a limestone based stucco traditional to the Yucatán Peninsula, applied over reinforced concrete. Valued for its humidity resistance, thermal performance and low maintenance, the soft pink finish is paired internally with tropical timbers and clay elements. Generous openings enable cross ventilation, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling and reinforcing the project’s bioclimatic approach to living in a tropical environment.
