Built to Last: CUTEK® Delivers Strength and Elegance for Five Acres

Nestled in the serene coastal township of Ventnor on Phillip Island, Five Acres is a boutique accommodation project that perfectly balances contemporary design with rugged durability. The property features three architecturally refined cabins, each meticulously crafted to thrive in the region’s demanding coastal environment.

Designing for the Coast
Phillip Island’s exposed landscape presents a unique challenge: relentless winds, salt‑laden air, and intense sun. Five Acres was designed to meet these conditions head‑on. Externally, the cabins are clad in timber that complements the natural surroundings while providing resilience against the elements. Inside, Tasmanian oak introduces warmth and texture, creating an intimate contrast to the wild coastal setting. The architectural intent is clear – to offer guests an immersive experience that connects them to the farmland and ocean beyond, without compromising on durability or ease of maintenance.

Timber That Endures
Central to the project’s longevity is the careful treatment of its timber. CUTEK® timber oils were applied to all exposed timber elements, providing deep protection against moisture‑driven issues like splitting, cupping, and warping. The penetrating formula allows the timber to weather naturally and develop a silvered patina over time, while maintaining its structural performance. For a property in such a harsh location, this low‑maintenance approach was essential, ensuring that the beauty of the cabins remains as enduring as their construction.

Collaboration and Craft
Five Acres is the product of a seamless collaboration between builder, designer, and client. Onsite Design’s construction expertise brought precision to every detail — from large‑format glazing that frames sweeping views, to bespoke joinery and sheltered outdoor bathing areas that merge harmoniously with the architecture. Every element was conceived with purpose, reflecting a shared commitment to quality, endurance, and an authentic sense of place.

A Lasting Impression
Five Acres stands as a testament to the power of honest materials, expert craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. With timber at its heart — protected by CUTEK® — the project achieves a rare harmony: structures that are both elegant and robust, capable of weathering the coastal elements with grace for years to come.
