Situated on the stunning coastline of Main Beach in Yamba, New South Wales, the Yamba Surf Life Saving Club, founded in 1908, holds a significant place in the history of surf lifesaving. This makes it one of the oldest surf clubs in the world, steeped in tradition and community spirit. However, decades of exposure to the elements—harsh sunlight, salty ocean air, and frequent storms—have taken their toll on both the clubhouse structure and the expansive decking that overlooks the beach.
Recognising the need for an upgrade, the club’s committee faced the critical decision of selecting a replacement decking material that could withstand the unforgiving Australian coastal environment while also complementing the club’s historic character. They sought a durable, high-quality solution and turned to experts for advice.

In this regard, they engaged with Tony McFarlane from TKMAC Building, whose reputation for quality craftsmanship is well-established in the community. Together, they meticulously evaluated various materials before opting for PermaTech® Spotted Gum boards from our premium Select range. These boards are not only visually appealing but also engineered for longevity and resistance to moisture and UV damage. Its double-sided design provides an aesthetically pleasing solution, affording a cohesive look from both above and below the deck.
To further enhance the new balcony’s functionality, the team incorporated a NexGEN weatherstrip. This innovative feature creates a dry zone beneath the deck, preventing water accumulation and ensuring that the area remains usable even after rain.

The project was executed with precision, and the final shipment of the decking was delivered on time and within the budget constraints established by the committee. Tony’s skilled installation has since garnered enthusiastic feedback from club members and visitors alike, enamouring them with the new space’s appearance and practicality.

Encouraged by the overwhelmingly positive response, the Yamba Surf Life Saving Club is already planning to refurbish an additional deck space, demonstrating its commitment to preserving the integrity and heritage of its beloved establishment while enhancing facilities for members and guests.
