Over 1,300 players descended on Queensland’s Pimpama Sports Hub for the 2025 Trilogy Funds Australian Pickleball Championships, competing on a portable court system designed to deliver performance, safety and thermal comfort across six days of competition.
The event, held from September 29 to October 6, is the flagship tournament on Australia’s pickleball calendar, bringing together players of all ages and abilities alongside international talent across singles, doubles, mixed doubles and specialty formats.
At the heart of the competition was California Sports Surfaces’ CoolTop portable interlocking pickleball court surface, installed in Forest Green and Steel Grey to match the official colours of the Australian Pickleball Championships. The modular system was laid over existing netball courts at Pimpama Sports Hub by Allabout Sports Courts, allowing for quick setup before the event and efficient pack-down once play wrapped up.
The interlocking design creates a stable, consistent playing surface that meets competitive standards while remaining fully portable, eliminating the need for permanent infrastructure changes. Each panel locks into place to deliver tournament-grade performance on what became the centrepiece court for Australia’s premier pickleball event.
CoolTop’s infrared-reflective technology proved particularly valuable during the Gold Coast’s late spring conditions. Players noted the system’s heat-reducing performance throughout the championship, with the surface staying noticeably cooler than conventional court coatings during extended match schedules and long days outdoors. The technology works by reflecting solar radiation rather than absorbing it, a feature that becomes increasingly important as outdoor sporting events contend with warmer Australian summers.
As the preferred court surface partner of Pickleball Australia, California Sports Surfaces continues to support the sport’s major events across the country. The relationship has evolved alongside pickleball’s explosive growth in Australia, where participation numbers have surged over recent years and demand for quality playing surfaces has intensified.
Brendan Lee, Executive Officer at Pickleball Australia, highlighted the practical advantages of the partnership. “Working with California Sports Surfaces and CoolTop as our preferred court surface means we can deliver consistent, high-quality playing conditions at these major events. The response from players and spectators was really positive, and the convenience of the portable interlocking system allows us to bring championship-level competition to venues nationwide as pickleball continues to grow across Australia.”
Beyond thermal management, the CoolTop system delivers the traction, ball response and durability required for tournament play. The acrylic coating provides UV stability and weather resistance suited to outdoor Australian conditions, while the modular base ensures uniform surface characteristics that players can rely on throughout multi-day competitions.
The 2025 Australian Pickleball Championships drew competitors ranging from emerging juniors to experienced players, alongside dedicated divisions for athletes with disabilities. The interlocking portable court technology allows major competitions to activate existing venues without purpose-built facilities – flexibility that’s proving essential as the sport establishes its competitive footprint across Australia.
