Australian design practice Pattern Studio has transformed a Sydney terrace into a sophisticated home for a father and his adult children, with the kitchen emerging as the project’s focal point.
On the ground floor, the open-plan kitchen flows seamlessly into dining and living areas, allowing for shared time together while maintaining a sense of privacy elsewhere in the house.
Central to the kitchen is a striking jade-green stone island, its bold veining acting as both sculpture and surface. Positioned opposite, a stainless steel unit houses the stove and storage, offering a sleek counterpoint to the natural stone.
Materiality defines the renovation, with Goodwin and Cain of Pattern Studio selecting finishes that balance warmth and refinement. A bespoke cherry burl cabinet conceals the fridge and pantry, designed as a freestanding piece that recalls a vintage wardrobe. This approach replaces traditional built-in joinery, reinforcing the studio’s preference for furniture-like elements that add depth and individuality.
Natural light floods the kitchen via floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that open onto a small courtyard, landscaped with greenery and anchored by a terrazzo bench. The result is a bright, textural interior that connects daily rituals with moments of retreat.
“The interiors are in keeping with our studio’s ethos of ‘sumptuous minimalism’ – pared back but with richness and texture,” says co-founder Lily Goodwin. “We wanted to create cohesion through the home without the palette feeling so uniform as if you were in a commercial space.”
Douglas fir, oversized stone and tactile detailing are repeated throughout the project, giving each space character while maintaining an overarching sense of calm. The home, nicknamed ‘Daddy Cool’, offers the client and his grown-up children a setting that celebrates both togetherness and independence. In the kitchen, this balance is most clearly realised, with materials, light and layout working in harmony to create a space that is both functional and deeply expressive.
