Glossier x Studio Lily Kwong create indoor landscape
Landscape designer, Studio Lily Kwong and beauty brand Glossier have teamed up to create a temporary pop-up shop in Seattle, in the city’s Capitol Hill neighbourhood.
The space, measuring 102 square metres, is filled with plant-covered mounds and bright splashes of pink and purple in a nod to Glossier’s branding.

The design was created by Glossier’s in-house team in collaboration with Lily Kwong. The team drew inspiration from the natural topography of the surrounding area, including Mount Rainer and a popular neighbourhood park.
Kendall Latham, Glossier’s senior environmental designer, says that the design was inspired by speaking to people from the area and finding out their love for nature was a unifying theme within the community. “We wanted to capture the mood of the surrounding landscape and represent the juxtaposition of nature and technology in the city,” she says.
The bright space is filled with plant-covered mounds of varying sizes. Live moss, Mexican feather grass and flowering shrubs are among the array of species used to adorn the hills, which were constructed using wooden ribs and wire mesh. Most of the plants are actually indigenous to the region and all of the vegetation was sourced locally.
Lily Kwong worked closely with horticulturalists and plant experts to make sure the plants were properly cared for and a maintenance plan was implemented.
Amongst the plants and mounds, white display pedestals are positioned throughout as well and each is topped with a Corian surface. Walls are painted stark white which is a contrast to the green hills and raw pine flooring. The space also features wall-mounted mirrors lined with thin LED strips.
Unique to the Seattle store are ‘plantable’ postcards, with wildflower seeds embedded in the paper. The team said, “Glossier Seattle, like all of our offline spaces, is designed to be a pinnacle of engagement for the community we’ve cultivated online, and an immersive embodiment of Glossier in real life.”
The Seattle location is set to open until the 7th of July.
